WINNIPEG—The recent news that more than 135 million litres of sewage were dumped into Manitoba’s Red River should worry not only residents of that Prairie province, but should function as a serious wake-up call for all Canadians. Needless to say, there are a multitude of reasons why we do not want hundreds of millions of untreated sewage leaking into our waterways.
The Canadian Infrastructure Report Card reveals that 25 per cent of the country’s water infrastructure is in fair, poor or very poor condition. When you look at Canada’s three Prairie provinces, the depreciation of water-related infrastructure outpaced investments by nearly CAD$3-billion between 2017 and 2021. The ever-intensifying impacts of climate change will undoubtedly place further pressure on this already weakening system. What we are talking about here is traditional infrastructure.
