If there was a red carpet big enough, they’d roll it out in front of the ferry when Dr. Maureen Gibbons arrives on Fogo Island in April. | SaltWire

Dr. Maureen Gibbons has been practicing medicine since 1979. She recently accepted a position on Fogo Island, where the residents are ecstatic at the news. Andrew Waterman/The TelegramFOGO ISLAND, N.L. — If there was a red carpet big enough, they’d roll it out in front of the ferry when Dr. Maureen Gibbons arrives on Fogo Island in April.

In a career that spans 43 years and includes requiring police escorts for house calls in London, the last five have been the most trying, she said. “Since I’ve come to this practice, I have worked every single weekend, with only one week off since July of 2019,” Gibbons said from her office on Queen’s Road. “My forever place, my forever job. I created it, I branded it, I designed it, I did everything, but it’s impossible to go on.”— Dr. Maureen GibbonsDue to the strain on her work and her life, she had interviews set up for positions in New Brunswick and P.E.I.

Working under a health authority means she will be paid for what she works, rather than spending her evenings and weekends trying to get through paperwork and forms on her own dime.
