Downed trees from post-tropical storm Fiona can cause a number of significant issues, including wildfires. Don CameronSaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for August 24, 2023 | SaltWireIf you are like thousands of Nova Scotia residents, you may still have a Fiona mess on your property that you would like deleted from view.

Residents awoke to shocking scenes around their homes, properties and communities. The most common scene was that of trees blown down and scattered like wooden match sticks emptied out haphazardly from their package.Certain areas of the province seemed to be particularly hard hit, such as the north shore of Pictou, Antigonish and Colchester Counties, Riversdale area and the Truro area. The amount of cleanup and repair work that was completed in the weeks following was incredible.

A large amount of downed tree debris creates a perfect storm of wildfire fuel – small, dried leaves and twigs to start the fire, and larger branches and stems that can sustain fire and build more heat for spreading to more fuel, and so on. This is especially threatening if the downed trees are close to home and other buildings.
