KENTVILLE, N.S. — A Kings County adult learner says he felt anxious at first but ended up finding a supportive environment and having a life-changing experience with the

Valley Community Learning Association co-executive director Rod Franklin, program co-ordinator Sophie Bérubé, and adult learner Mark Ashe visit the VCLA’s community gardens. The achievements of Ashe and other adult learners will be celebrated at the Literacy Mile event on June 8. Kirk Starratt “It’s really helpful to see how you can change how people see you just by being more open,” Ashe said.

The Ability Works program helps participants with employability skills. The VCLA began offering it in January. The Literacy Mile takes place at the VCLA Community Hub at 118 Oakdene Ave., North Kentville, on June 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event includes live music, hotdogs, refreshments, a bounce castle for kids, and other activities.

Franklin said the association is in the process of refreshing its strategic plan. This could include a new name for the Literacy Mile in the future considering that it no longer includes a walk due to logistical challenges.Among them is a personal development program called Lifestreams that helps adult learners with self-awareness, self-care, values clarification, communication skills, team skills, and more.
