Vaughn Palmer: Public inquiry should be beyond the reach of NDP's partisan political hands

VICTORIA — If the New Democrats do order a public inquiry into money-laundering as expected this week, they will have to overcome the objections they themselves raised many times.

Eby again: “People are notified if they’re at risk of having a finding made that they violated a law or a policy, whether criminal or civil or administrative. Former cabinet minister and NDP president Moe Sihota: “The provincial government can only have an inquiry into areas of provincial responsibility. And there is a lot of overlapping jurisdiction here with the federal government. It strikes me that there would be limited benefit in having a public inquiry that is limited only to the provincial side of it.”

Plus money-laundering is complicated, needing resources that might daunt even a well-funded public inquiry. Eby again: “People should not expect that a public inquiry will necessarily provide additional policy recommendations or close additional loopholes. I don’t think a public inquiry is going to be the answer to stopping it . That’s around policing and rule changes that we have a very good road map for here and are already implementing.”
