Opinion: It\u0027s impossible to judge which is the best approach to replacing the Massey Tunnel because the NDP don\u0027t want you to do that

The New Democrats intend that the tunnel will be built under one of their project benefit agreements, favouring union labour and benefits. But they blacked out the percentage estimate for what that requirement will add to the cost of construction.Article contentThe business case does concede that “the delivery of the immersed tube tunnel has a greater risk profile than the bridge crossing.”

Having seen the unredacted versions of such reports in the past, I can attest that the material being withheld likely serves to protect the political interest of the government. Nor is the current cost estimate of the take-it-to-the-bank variety, given that the tunnel project is still a long way from final approval.Article content

“Tsawwassen First Nation has expressed a preference for a bridge solution over an immersed tube tunnel, citing greater environmental impacts to the Fraser River and fish habitats among other concerns,” says the ministry. “In response, the ministry has sought to focus discussions with the First Nation on potential long-term improvements to the river environment and fish habitat.

If they had just f’ing got on with it years ago they would have saved millions

Why the secrecy? 🤔what is the bcndp trying to hide? bcpoli

First nations and mayors did NOT want the tunnel, every mayor voted the bridge down. So, why are you lying, did the bc liberals give you a cut into the coal ships and oil tankers they’d allow in?

Oh BS they did Palmer, you opinion pieces are getting old, all you do is attack, what’s the going price for a BS story? You’re ruining all media. Shame

Great report. No surprise.

So how much SLR will there be 2050 folks? vanpoli

It’s very clear a tunnel is way worse than a bridge from a cost, traffic and environmental perspective- it’s politics over common sense! VaughnPalmer KevinFalcon keithbaldrey PauloEastvan

A tunnel is an utterly absurd decision. High cost, high schedule, high risk, high environmental impact, zero increase incapacity. The only thing going for it in the eyes of the NDP is that it’s not the Liberals’ scheme, which would have been almost finished by now.

Giant gateway to the bottleneck at Oak,Granville,Cambie…

Waste of $$ either way

Of course they did. Cause a bridge would make way more sense…

Defeating parking fee a loss in fight against climate change, say expertsWhy some experts say Vancouver city council’s decision not to adopt an on-street, overnight parking fee was a major missed opportunity in efforts to battle climate change. Story by SusanLazaruk SusanLazaruk The policy that should be adopted is congestion fees in the core areas with exemptions for zero-emissions vehicles. This broadbase approach applies to everyone coming to our city and sets incentives to move to electric drive across all vehicles. CityofVancouver greenestcity SusanLazaruk This solution would impact the poorer city dweller most. The rich are more likely to have off-street parking. Climate change should be fought, but not on the backs of the poor. City staff needs to come up with a better solution.
