Opinion: The that-was-then, this-is-now world of politicians where short-term goals trump principles

Another forestry bill, making over the tenure system and limiting government’s obligation to pay compensation for taking back cutting rights, would get the same expedited treatment by adjournment Thursday.

In Opposition, John Horgan was eloquent in denouncing the resort to closure by the then B.C. Liberal government. For it was a sign of their inability to manage the legislative agenda and also of a casual disregard for the democratic process.“This is a heavy-handed push by the NDP to limit the voices of Opposition and push through their agenda,” declared Opposition house leader Peter Milobar.

“Throughout the fall session we have heard a consistent message from stakeholder organizations, First Nations, and the general public: The public consultation on proposed legislation was insufficient. The calendar was aimed at bringing more order to the business of the house, ending open-ended sessions where proceedings would drag into the summer, sometimes including marathon overnight sittings.

The real downside to the abuse of time allocation is something political parties rarely contemplate when in government. It only occurs to them when they are back in Opposition.
