For Wheatland County, the announcement represents more than just a single project. It’s a step forward to diversify its economic base.

The rural municipality east of Calgary will soon be home to a new $210-million wallboard manufacturing facility, with construction of the large plant planned near the hamlet of Carseland.

“We’ve been working on solving the riddle about having a plant in Western Canada for probably 30 years, and so I’m excited that we’re able to get this over the goal-line“With drywall and wallboard, it’s pretty heavy, bulky stuff. And the fact that we’ve been able to sort of solve that riddle and put a plant that makes economic sense for us — and makes good business sense for our customers — in Calgary, or in the Calgary area in Alberta, is a huge win for us.

USG, which was purchased by German building materials manufacturer Knauf for US$7 billion in 2018, operates 49 manufacturing locations and has 6,900 employees across North America — and is the largest wallboard manufacturer on the continent. “But it has become clear due to pressures and just changing market dynamics . . . that we needed to diversify our economy.”

The county also offers prospective businesses access to several transportation links — including highways and nearby CP rail — and can provide a large land base to prospective companies for industrial and agricultural developments, Link noted. “I want job security for our Wheatland County residents and for those who choose to come and work in Wheatland County, and potentially relocate.”
