Updated: In a statement, Mac’s parents, Chris Saini and Shelley Sheppard, said: “No punishment will ever bring our sweet boy back to us. We feel this sentence falls years short, and is grossly feeble in its severity.”

In April, Susy Yasmine Saad, 44, pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life for nine children, including Mac Saini, a 16-month-old boy who died at the Olive Branch Family Daycare on Kitchener Street on Jan. 18, 2017.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

In imposing sentence Monday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Wedge said Saad’s decision to have three times the number of allowable children endangered the lives of those kids. The judge noted that toddlers present a particular risk and require a high degree of supervision and found that Saad had deceived the parents, many of whom were desperate to find daycare for their children.

The Crown had called for a two-year jail sentence while the defence argued that a conditional sentence to be served in the community was a more appropriate sentence. The judge found that the paramount sentencing principles of denunciation and deterrence could not be met with a conditional sentence and jail time was required.Article content

“The road has been excruciatingly long to this minute and trivial measure of justice for Mac,” said the parents. “No punishment will ever bring our sweet boy back to us. We feel this sentence falls years short, and is grossly feeble in its severity.”
