Now an icon on Vancouver’s waterfront, the Vancouver Convention Centre’s operators contend the facility has come into its own.

The Vancouver Convention Centre’s expansion, which opened in 2009 as an $883-million, budget busting gamble on the meetings and conferences business, more than holds its own a decade on, its operators contend.

After a full decade, however, the numbers have added up: more than nine million visitors have attended 5,561 events, from 1,000 delegates of the Human Resources Management Association who were holding their conference during the tour Tuesday, to 16,500 of the SIGGRAPH 2018 convention last summer. Smith said they’ve learned to be flexible in how they allocate space in the west building to host everything from weddings to trade shows, such as the recent Vancouver International Auto Show, and as the centrepiece location for former U.S. president Barack Obama’s speech for the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

The high-profile TED Talks, which have been resident at the west building since 2012, is another testament to the west building’s success, Lehto said. Lehto said the VCC has been in surplus for almost five years now, and “we’re happy not to be a drain on PavCo or the province.”
