Health worker who caught measles had been vaccinated: MUHC

The employee at the McGill University Health Centre who contracted the measles — and who might have inadvertently exposed dozens of patients to the highly contagious virus for several days at the end of March — had received the standard two shots years earlier, an MUHC infectious-diseases specialist said Monday.

“We believe that the individual in question acquired the infection while on a trip to the Caribbean roughly three weeks before the start of his symptoms,” Lefebvre said. “We do not believe it was an acquisition from Montreal itself, and we do not believe we have any secondary infections as well.” The MUHC has monitored closely all its hospitalized patients who might have been exposed to the contagious employee, while sending letters to those who have returned home. To date, public-health authorities have not reported any additional infections.

Drouin praised the MUHC’s response to the exposure. Nonetheless, the incident has prompted the MUHC “to review its employee immunization strategies again in-depth continuous quality improvement,” Lefebvre said.

Ottawa Public Health warns about highly infectious measles case in cityOttawa Public Health is urging people to take precautions following a confirmed case of measles in the city. Makes me happy I had an MMR antibody count done a while back last time there was a scare. Not that I will ever chance it, but at least I'm covered if there are more idiots out there. If a vaccine is available, and declined, all health care costs should be out-of-pocket. Anti-vaxxers have now become a financial liability to our already strained health care system.
