The primary care gap for visible minorities and recent immigrants is of particular concern, and recent immigrants need special consideration, Etches said. “They are often marginalized and have unique health-care needs,” and their health has shown to decline after arrival in Canada. The Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre reported that prior to 2020, it was able to successfully pair 75 per cent of its clients with a family doctor. Since the start of the pandemic, that has fallen dramatically and now no doctors are accepting new patients from the centre.
The issue of the primary care gap for Ottawans also came up during last fall’s municipal election campaign, when now-Mayor Mark Sutcliffe promised to create a recruitment strategy to attract more family doctors to Ottawa and alleviate the crisis — something other municipalities have done.
