The U.S. House passed legislation Friday to revive a ban on semi-automatic guns, the first vote of its kind in years and a direct response to the firearms often used in the crush of mass shootings ripping through communities nationwide.

Once banned in the U.S., the high-powered firearms are now widely blamed as the weapon of choice among young men responsible for many of the most devastating mass shootings. But Congress allowed the restrictions first put in place in 1994 on the manufacture and sales of the weapons to expire a decade later, unable to muster the political support to counter the powerful gun lobby and reinstate the weapons ban.

The bill comes at a time of intensifying concerns about gun violence and shootings - the supermarket shooting in Buffalo, N.Y.; massacre of school children in Uvalde, Texas; and the July Fourth shootings of revelers in Highland Park, Ill. The Biden administration said for 10 years while the ban was in place, mass shootings declined. “When the ban expired in 2004, mass shootings tripled,” the statement said.

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said the weapons ban is not about taking away Americans' Second Amendment rights but ensuring that children also have the right “to not get shot in school.” For nearly two decades, since the previous ban expired Democrats had been reluctant to revisit the issue and confront the gun lobby. But voter opinions appear to be shifting and Democrats dared to act before the fall election. The outcome will provide information for voters of where the candidates stand on the issue.

Congress passed a modest gun violence prevention package just last month in the aftermath of the tragic shooting of 19 school children and two teachers in Uvalde. That bipartisan bill was the first of its kind after years of failed efforts to confront the gun lobby, including after a similar 2012 mass tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Zero chance it makes any difference

Great, now if only this would ensure criminals still can’t get guns…… oh wait…. THAT CAN NEVER HAPPEN 🙄

Great! But will the Senate pass it?

I don’t understand why anyone would think that the general public should be allowed to own such a weapon. It’s appalling to me.

Amazing! Now the Senate…🙏🏻

She’s going to be shot out of the air isn’t she?

It happened here in Canada on May 2020. I’m sorry to my American friends down south. Unfortunately politics are games to most liberals. You have the 2nd ammendemnt right to bear arms. For good reason. And a tyrannical Govt wants a disarmed population

So basically every gun made in 100 years. Dumb

semi-automatic gun ban? aren't most guns semi-automatic?

If semiauto is the “trigger” I’m glad mine were all lost in a tragic boating accident a few years back.

About fucking time. Now please tell these macho, short penis men in Canada, they can be men without guns and two story pickup trucks. God, I just wish they would effing grow up.

Not a chance

Thankfully it’ll never pass the senate

Lol..good luck walking into Cali and enforcing any gun laws...

I wonder how fast it will be challenged in the supreme court.

But yet they can’t control criminals with illegals guns on the streets?

Maybe there’s hope afterall.

U.S. House to vote Friday on bill to ban assault-style weapons, Pelosi saysThe legislation faces a tough road in the narrowly divided U.S. Senate, where Republicans overwhelmingly oppose such a ban and have the power to block legislation The pro-murder people ain’t gonna like this one bit I can see why Pelosi wants to disarm law abiding citizens. It's dead in the Senate no matter what happens in the House. It's a carbon copy of the demonstrably ineffective 1994 'ban' that was based on nonsense.

House Judiciary Committee: Whistleblowers Say FBI ‘Pressuring Agents’ to Reclassify Cases as Domestic Terrorism'For example, one whistleblower explained that because agents are not finding enough DVE [domestic violent extremist] cases, they are encouraged and incentivized to reclassify cases as DVE cases even though there is minimal, circumstantial evidence to support the reclassification.' Wells Fargo did the same thing regarding quotas for sales. That didn't work out well for them.
