British police arrested a 27-year-old man early Monday on suspicion of murder and seven counts of attempted murder following a string of stabbings in a busy nightlife district in the central England city of Birmingham over the weekend.

The arrest follows a large-scale police manhunt in the wake of the stabbings in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police released CCTV footage of the man they said was wanted on suspicion of murder.

Following the arrest, Birmingham Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Steve Graham, said one line of enquiry "ultimately led us to an address in the Selly Oak area this morning where a man was arrested."Local police have faced criticism of their response to the attacks, notably how the attacker was able to wander the city during his 90-minute rampage. The victims appeared to have been chosen at random.

The stabbings took place at a time when nightlife is gradually resuming across city centres in the U.K. following the national coronavirus lockdown.

Signs of trouble before police pinned Daniel Prude naked on streetDaniel Prude appeared to be spiraling into crisis in the hours before police handcuffed him on a city street in March, then pinned the naked man face down. People are expecting a Social Worker to go out at 3am to a scene like this with a man on PCP who is out of control? And how do they protect themselves from violence and/or being spit on? You don't send social workers to deal with someone out of their mind on PCP spitting at you... maybe we should start though. Once some are injured or killed then the CTV will be writing articles as to why the police aren't called Maybe we should start sending politicians out to deal with these people. They may get a different perspective on things and actually start backing the police for a change.
