University of Illinois Paying Trans Students to Journal About Their “Toileting Experiences”
In hopes of facilitating a “holistic” toileting experience, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is paying students who identify as “transgender” or “non-binary” to journal about their use of restrooms that do not align with their biological sex, according to a tip received through Young America’s Foundation’s“Toilets and their usage must become a topic of open conversation,” a page on the university’s website.
Participants are instructed to complete written reflections about their toilet usage and take pictures as needed. Examples of journal entries are provided. “My girls and I are inseparable…except when we have to pee! Because they are cis women and I’m a trans woman, I have to use a different bathroom all by myself,” one example states. The fictional male identifying as a woman in the aforementioned example goes on to complain that he can’t socialize in the restroom and borrow makeup from his female friends.
Another example journal entry imagines a scenario in which a student is worried about being harassed while walking down a poorly-lit corridor on the way to a nearby “all-gender” restroom.
