Two years after Russia's invasion, some young Ukrainians find slivers of normalcy in Toronto

In the two years since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, 2022, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have come to Canada. In Toronto, she's been able to enjoy some more typical undergraduate experiences — from attending networking events to visiting Montreal with friends, even trying bouldering for the first time. Alina Vornina has been in Toronto since May, where she said she's enjoyed the opportunity to attend events like conferences. At St. Demetrius Catholic School in Etobicoke — an Eastern Rite school offering programs enriched with Ukrainian language, culture and religion to students from junior kindergarten to grade eight — the student population has swelled from 240 to 440 since the invasion began, according to principal Lily Hordienko.

Trying to provide a sense of normalcy for the students from Ukraine through a variety of extracurriculars is essential, said Hordienko. Grade 12 student Julia Levadina arrived in Canada in March 2022. She said she was the first student fleeing the war to attend the school. At first, she said it was hard to make friends.

The group of welcoming Ukrainian students made it easy for Mykhailo Vikol to make friends when he came to Canada about four months ago.
