BREAKING TSB says train that derailed near Field, B.C. began to move on its own

The ill fated train was a unit grain train I believe. This would have been at least 16,000 tons with high weight per axle ratio. A longer 16,000 ton train with lighter cars would behave differently.

While the engineer on the train had 20 yrs experience, he may not have ever taken over a parked train with that tonnage, at that location in those exact weather conditions. On that basis he may have been 'inexperienced' in the situation.

This started with a parked train sitting which means airbrakes were not conditioned (warmed) reducing effectiveness. The'DB' on those units should have held the train in control as it started to move. Look at the 1997 derailment in same location for clues.

Now that's fucking brilliant! Loss of control? Who would ever have thought it? Thank God for the TSB.

.....a 'loss of control'...... Any possibility this might be related to doing TWICE the safe speed? Just askin'...................
