Maritime Animal Response Society trying to find out what led to whale being in river
Members of the Marine Animal Response Society were on the Stewiacke River Thursday trying to find clues as to what led to the death of a humpback whale in the nearby Shubenacadie River on Tuesday.
It was trapped in the low water of the river twice on Monday and didn’t survive, then floated into the Stewiacke River to the town of the same name. She said while humpbacks do sometimes go up rivers, “in general we don’t really see animals at the back of the Bay of Fundy. This animal would have been in Cobequid Bay and then gone up the river, and it isn’t a common area where we see humpback whales. It is a bit odd, and another reason we need to do some investigation to see if there was anything underlying in its health and things like that.”
The location of the whale Thursday on the muddy bed of the river made access difficult, so the Stewiacke fire department was called to help get MARS members to the site.“For an animal of this size to be out of the water is really not great because it is so large. Part of the reason whales are so amazing and get to be so big is because they are in water and don’t have to deal with gravity in the same way,” Wimmer said.
