TORONTO — They don’t have a superstar like Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews. These days, they don’t even have a captain. But when it comes to handicapping…

“Last year, everyone was picking us to have a great year. It didn’t work out that way,” said former Jets captain Blake Wheeler. “And the year when we went to the Western Conference final, everyone was picking us to finish last in our division. Very often, the media doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

It’s quite the turnaround from where Winnipeg was a year ago, when the team said goodbye to their second head coach in a matter of months after missing the playoffs by nine points. “Colorado is going to make a push,” said Wheeler. “They’ve been banged up this year and now they’re starting to get healthy, so you know they’re going to be a tough team going down the stretch for sure. We’ve always had a strong division so there’s never an off game. It’s going to be a fight to the finish.”

Well, that and the fact that Winnipeg doesn’t have to beat Tampa Bay and Boston just to reach the conference final. As for the Leafs, they are once again stuck playing in a conference that includes the top-5 teams in the league. Even if they get past the Lightning and the Bruins, they still might have to face the Carolina Hurricanes or Devils. Good luck with that.
