The cost of taking a taxi in Toronto could soon rise by $1 per trip in response to rising gas prices which have significantly cut into driver profits.

which will be considered by the city’s general government and licensing committee on Friday recommends that the “drop rate,” which is the base fare riders are charged the second they enter a taxi, be increased from $3.25 to $4.25 immediately.

“Staff acknowledge that the current state of the market, particularly the sudden and rapid increase in fuel prices over the months of February and March requires immediate action,” the report notes. “While generally a review of tariff levels should include public and industry consultation, at this time and given the increased operating cost factors of rising fuel prices and inflation, a recommendation to increase taxicab fares immediately is appropriate.

That is up nearly 50 per cent from April of last year, when drivers were paying an average of $1.22 per litre to fuel up. They also point out that the increase will be the first to the base fare since 2010, when the city began including HST in the charge.

Remember we are ran by a bunch of liberals ?

Bringing themselves a step closer to obsolescence with options like Uber and Lyft or even walking.

Grab as much as you can before you're obsolete. Just park those cabs beside the typewriters when your shift is over.

Taxis are losing customers by the day And what’s the best solution Raise fare

As if I needed another reason not to take a taxi….

Taxis? You mean with the dash mounted meters, cheap vinyl seats and an old driver who smells like cigars? What century are you living in?

The driver will not see the cash. Only the owners will.

funny because banks have raised the taking money out fee by 50 cents... if you have scotia and go to rbc it went up.

Remember the last time taxi fares were raised after a driver was stabbed and they said the fare raise was so taxis could be equipped with dividers between driver and passenger How many taxis have dividers in them

They still have taxi's

Idi nahui

Uber & Lyft have a significant portion of the ride market. Yes there are many who will use taxis for their reasons. However no matter what they do, taxis will continue to lag behind Uber & Lyft in Toronto

Will they drop if gas prices drop?

The Liberals are promising more and more social programs to buy votes to stay in power. But national defense is more important than social programs. If the country is invaded and occupied by our enemies, these social programs would cease to exist. Quite a joke really ... a billion dollars ? Wildlife cameras from Bass River Pro shops would be just as effective as we have nothing to defend ourselves in the event of attack anyway.
