Toronto's intensive care units could run out of space before the end of the month, the city's top public health official says

Paramedics wheel a patient into the emergency department at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Cole BurstonTORONTO -- Toronto’s top public health official says that the city’s intensive care units could run out space by the end of January amid a COVID-19 surge that continues to worsen.

“The issue is that in any scenario we are on track to surpass the standard ICU capacity before the end of January,” de Villa said. “This simply emphasizes yet again how important it is that to the greatest extent possible we together as a community do our very best to maintain distance with others in order to protect our health system to the greatest extent possible.”

The modelling presented by de Villa on Monday suggests that once the number of COVID patients in the ICU hits 200, many hospitals will begin to run out of beds.At Humber River Hospital all 46 beds in the ICU are now filled and more than half of them are taken up by COVID-19 patients. De Villa said during Monday’s meeting that the city’s reproductive number now stands at 1.05. That is actually lower than the reproductive number for Ontario as a whole, which stood at 1.08 last week. It also represents a decline from earlier in January when the reproductive number reached 1.2, but de Villa said that it still suggests that things are deterioirating.

They already moved patients from T.O. to Kingston hospital (4 days ago) and moving more.

How does this compare to winters past? 🤷‍♀️

That’s been happing for years throughout Canada. Nothing new.

Key word is “COULD” 🤦‍♂️

Stop with this irrational fear, you are destroying people mentally

That is one very scary scenario. That they even 'could' run out of space is enough of an incentive for everyone to be smart and stay safe. Use every precaution.

And pigs fly... or work at CTV. I always get that confused. Enough BS.

We've had an entire year to prepare for this.

What about the empty burlington overflow?

Wasn't CTV news in past years writing articles about how hospitals were suffering due to budget cuts? What changed? COVID... LOL

Haven't our 'top' public health officials been saying that since March?

Blah blah blah....
