Ingrid Burke has found a home.
The one-bedroom apartment she has been offered “is everything I want,” said Burke, 59, who was contacted by her employer, The Neighbourhood Group, a Toronto social service agency, who helped find her the unitThe rent is about $900, roughly a third of the approximately $2,800 she takes home each month from her job as a peer support worker in harm reduction.
It’s also well below the $1,500 that Burke had identified as the maximum she could pay for an apartment. Knowing her budgetfor the average one-bedroom apartment in Toronto, she was offering to do yard work, cleaning and maintenance in exchange for a safe roof with space for her five grandchildren to visit.Burke has been living in a boarding house but disagreements with the other male tenants prompted her to give her notice for July 1.
The Neighbourhood Group, an amalgamation of six smaller charities, provides child care, home care, housing, employment supports and help for newcomers. The agency employs people in shelters and precarious housing as a way of helping them achieve their dreams, said Sinclair.
