Tony Comper: Fight against racism starts in school

After some soul searching and speaking with friends, we decided to form a coalition of non-Jewish business and community leaders to stand up and speak out against anti-Semitism. We called this initiative FAST, which stands for Fighting Antisemitism Together. What began with full-page newspaper advertisements across the country and a speech turned into an organization that has had a real impact.

Developed with leading experts at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and targeted at children in grades 6, 7 and 8, we came up with a resource that met curriculum guidelines for all provinces and territories.

To date, 4.4 million students have taken part in these programs in over 22,000 schools across Canada. Having turned 75 this year, I suddenly realized that my golf score and my age were intersecting, and both were headed north.

Beyond the difficulties of keeping our children safe under very challenging conditions, there are many important issues that teachers will tackle this school year, including the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, anti-Chinese rhetoric coming out of the White House and the appalling treatment of a true hero, Raptors president Masai Ujiri, by a police officer in California.

If only the fight against conformity to ideological group-think started in school.

Feeding them racism ideas where none exists. Need to undo such learning in school. Encourage treating everyone equally irrespective of color, race , gender. Don't push virtue signalling in their face.

At some point maybe the penny will drop & the realization will hit that the fight against racism has caused as much racism as it has eradicated through affirmative action. It is now more an industry than anything else.
