Wednesday, March 8: A Kingston\u002Dborn, innovative program for aging at home wins kudos. Meanwhile, Transpo complaints keep rolling in.

My Mom, at 93, has just entered long-term care in Toronto, and sadly, Brian passed away in Kingston on March 6. My mom is thrilled that the Oasis concept continues to grow as a way to get seniors the support they need to stay in their homes and out of long-term care. Brian would also be happy to know that so many years of work and dedication to this cost-saving and thoughtful concept are getting recognition and that Oasis is beginning to grow across the country.

One unstated reason the cost of replacing absent employees has been skyrocketing since the pandemic is because the OCDSB is spending millions sending its staff home with pay. At just one school, Pinecrest Public, 14 employees have been sent home with pay in the last two years while an additional eight have gone on stress leave.Article content

Perhaps if the board stops some of its employees from abusing their power over others, it can find some extra savings. Unfortunately, as we’ve witnessed repeatedly lately with the rise of school violence, only public awareness and pressure will get this board to do the right thing.Buskers, free WiFi, tap-and-ride coming soon as OC Transpo tries to lure riders backA letter-writer suggests that better service, rather than freebies and giveaways, will result in more paying customers for OC Transpo.

That’s right, of course, but that idea has never motivated Transpo to improve bus service in the past. So I have another proposal: I would be willing to ride the infrequent and ill-appointed buses if Oc Transpo paid me $5 for every city block I travel. This would, in part, compensate me for the time wasted in waiting for buses.I am a busker. And I am a little sick and tired of urban dreamers romantically rolling out the idea of “animating” public spaces with buskers.

You want reliable, experienced, good musicians? Well we are here. COVID has ruined a lot of our livelihoods. Pay us what our talent, experience and daily practice is worth. OC Transpo, are you asking your cleaners to sweep for tips?

Lorraine Explains: More speed cameras are coming; won't anyone think of the speeders?Ottawa city councillor sees speed cameras as a cash\u002Dgrab, but cameras make streets safer. drivingdotca Lol. Cars slow down for the speed camera then speed up after passing it. So, yay? We stopped speeders on a 100m stretch of road. Mission accomplished. drivingdotca Its in snowflake ottawa, who cares, no one goes there. drivingdotca Perfect - municipal governments will be able to generate lots of revenue by adding speed enforcement cameras and reducing city street speeds to 40km/hr and school zones to 30 km/hr. Let’s put GPS sensors on cars and automatically issue ticket anytime you go 1km/hr over?
