Winston Churchill’s successor Anthony Eden was in Ottawa on this date in 1956 for private talks with Louis St.-Laurent and the latter’s foreign minister, Lester Pearson. The distinguished visitor to Canada also attended a full meeting of the St.-Laurent cabinet during his stay.

It was a busy couple of days as Eden accepted an invitation to address a joint-session of Canada’s Parliament. He ended his speech by expressing his confidence in Canada’s future role on the world stage. “It is not given to many of us to look far into the future, but of this no one who observes your country from outside can doubt a future, an almost unimaginably great future, is in your hands,” Eden said. “I have no doubt that you will fashion it in a manner worthy of a great people. And so, Mr. Speakers, I salute this Canada which commands the future as probably no other land in the world today. I salute you also as the standard bearer of loyalty and a herald of good will. And I wish you well.
