Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee visit to Canada continued on this date in 2002. British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, who would serve Canada with distinction our High Commissioner to the UK a decade later as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was celebrated, officially welcomed Elizabeth II to his province.: On behalf of all British Columbians, it is my great pleasure to welcome Your Majesty and Your Royal Highness to British Columbia.

Your Majesty and Your Royal Highness have been part of British Columbia’s evolution. In 1971 you visited several communities on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of British Columbia’s joining confederation. In 1987 we were honoured by your presence during the opening session of government … an occasion symbolic of the fundamental process of democracy. In 1994 you were present for the Commonwealth Games right here in Victoria.

And while a lot has changed in British Columbia over the past half-century, one constant which has remained is the sincere affection between the people of British Columbia and their Queen. Your Majesty’s Golden Jubilee is a time of celebration. It is a time for all of us to honour your remarkable reign….

We thank you both for your participation in these events, we thank you for your service to British Columbia over the past 50 years, and we thank you. Your Majesty, for sharing your Golden Jubilee with us.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon.
