Any Canadian who loves our nation’s political history remains in the debt of Paul Martin Sr. His two volume memoirs,, remain a must-read for studying the King-St.-Laurent, Pearson, and Pierre Trudeau eras.Prime Minister — my friend Paul Martin Jr. — left politics in the 1970s. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau wisely appointed Mr. Martin as our nation’s High Commission in London.

After his retirement from his UK post, Mr. Martin published his diary entries from his time in London. They are a wonderful read and illustrate the important role the former cabinet minister and Liberal heavyweight played in diplomacy as well. That is a long way of saying that on November 7, 1978, High Commissioner Martin discussed in the privacy of his diary an upcoming visit by Pierre Trudeau to see Her Majesty the Queen. It was the era of constitutional reform and our Monarch was kept closely informed as the diary entry reveals. PM Trudeau — and Canada’s Premiers, it seems — were strong supporters of the Monarchy., the role of the monarchy will be discussed,” Mr. Martin wrote.

Again, I highly recommend Mr. Martin’s London diaries to students and fans of Canadian political history, and, to any Canadian diplomat being posted to London.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.
