‘Time to act’: Advocates press feds to tackle online hate speech, raise wording concerns

, attracted criticism from the Opposition Conservatives and others who expressed concern that it could curb freedom of speech or be difficult to enforce.Canadian government needs to take action on online hate, says expertCanadian Heritage and the Department of Justice say they’re working on ways to address the issue and note the solution could involve more than one bill.

“The bill doesn’t work on its own,” she said, adding tackling online harm continues to be “a priority for the government.”Google warns Canada’s plan to fight online hate is ‘vulnerable to abuse’ The Coalition to Combat Online Hate, which includes Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Indigenous and Black organizations, has written to Justice Minister David Lametti and Rodriguez urging them to ensure that a bill regulating online hate and vitriol will have “swift passage” through parliament.

Bill C-36 would have amended the Canadian Human Rights Act to bring in a new version of a controversial section that was repealed in 2013 amid criticism that it violated the right to free speech. The proposed change would have more narrowly defined hatred as “the emotion that involves detestation or vilification” that is “stronger than dislike or disdain.” Bill C-36 would also have amended the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“Our understanding is they are working really hard on this but that there thinking is not completely finished,” Marceau said of the government’s efforts to date.

Language police exist in every country and existing laws on harassment and assault. Free speech is hardly free it can cost a great deal was the old saying. Court said don't need a bunch more stuff it's already covered by existing things. They are just busy. War and all.

Conservatives are freaking out because they will lose their platform.

Do they realize how harmful restricting free speech is?

GlobalCalgary The government cannot protect me from online harm - only I can protect myself from online harm. I know that ‘names will never hurt me’ bc my parents raised me to be honest, kind and strong and not give AF what ppl think/say about me. I don’t give others power over my feelings.

Canada requiring services to police content is the height of hubris. We simply don't have the market to support the risk and censorship infrastructure costs that will be required by services to comply...make it to onerous to operate and they'll simply pull out of Canada.

Or a person could just hit “delete”. Next issue …

also this would only apply to Canadians so what's the point anyway? You can't control what people in the US say so if these people are so hurt by mean tweets they should stay off US platforms.

I got doxxed and was accused of horrible things by my haters online. I almost committed suicide and lost my mind. Free speech? There’s a limit to things a person can say. Use common sense!

what are they going to do shut down the media? the media is the one for the most than is spreading hate, and the politicians.

More propaganda to usher in more censorship. Fake news is so transparent.

Charter article 2 freedom of conscience, thought & expression. No change to hate speech sections in criminal code. Stand of guard for thee.

Yeah, there’s a block and delete option too.

The hateful narrative is pushed by MSM and the current woke mob. I'm not sure why JustinTrudeau and the liberal_party have such a hatred for the Charter, and Canadians, for that matter. Freedom of Speech and Opinions are pillars of our country and must be left alone.

Lies MediaLies Propaganda FakeNewsMedia

….. FROM MEDIA!

The problem with this is who decides what constitutes as hateful content? Is it the people banning the Handmaids Tale or To Kill a Mockingbird? Is it the people wanting to burn books? Speech should be free - it doesn’t mean without consequence but it should be free

Aww the poor babies can’t handle the internet 😂

we can start with means like this...

If only I could fight it! With some sort of turn off button!

How about you act on eating a dick?

Gotta love corporate media screaming for censorship. The propagandists are worried.

This article is arguing in favour of opinion censorship in Canada. That fundamentally removes democracy. It’s gone the instant Trudeau’s bills pass.
