Martina Fisher's grandfather made the family's tikinagan around 85 years ago. She said a curator from Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum travelled to Bloodvein First Nation and bought the tikinagan from her mom for $30. The item was returned to her last month.
A tikinagan is a traditional tool used by First Nations mothers to carry infants on their backs. Fisher, who is Anishinaabe from Bloodvein First Nation, also describes it as a child's first form of education, because they go everywhere the mother does in the community. Over the years, her family knew about the piece being showcased in the museum and Fisher said that her late sisterFisher estimates that the tikanagan is around 85 years old and was used by half of her mother's 23 children.Martina's family is pictured here, with her eldest sister Lillian holding her niece in the tikinagan in 1968.
"I feel a lot closer to my mom and dad because it's part of us. It's part of me…. It's a puzzle that you put back," said Fisher, who plans on keeping the tikinagan in the family's possession.Emilie Bordeleau-Laroche started working at the St. Boniface museum as a curator in September of last year and was made aware that requests were previously made for the family's tikinagan.
I think “taken” means it was undersold; that the buyer knew the value of it but the family was not really made aware of the heritage value. It has happened to my family, too. Things of my grandfather’s were sold to a museum (& other buyers) by an aunt. She had no right.
I missed something. In one place says the museum purchased item (but not from whom) and in another that museum took item. So which is true? Mind if the latter the museum should have confirmed the seller had right to sell.
I’m shocked Canadians don’t value others heritage. Oh wait…
