Moira is a 16-year-old student attending her second year of high school atin Truro. As a student living with an intellectual disability, she works with other students and educational assistants in a special education classroom. Her mother described her as a quiet kid who loves reading.
If an EA called in sick, there typically wasn’t another trained EA to replace them for the day, leaving the classroom understaffed, she said. “For the 2023-24 school year, we have filled all of our EA Positions at Cobequid Educational Centre,” said the release. “On occasion, we are unable to fill day-to-day absences. When we do not have a substitute to replace an EA, the school looks at re-assigning the workload internally to ensure all students who require support receive it.”
In Todd’s opinion, the issue with that is that there are not enough staff for aggressive youth to have a one-on-one EA. “They are being denied leave that they are entitled to apply for because of the shortages of staffing,” said Mullen. “Some of our members tell us the level of pay for that substitute is abysmal. No one wants to work for those wages,” said Mullen., EAs in Nova Scotia are the lowest paid in the country, with wages starting out at $15 per hour with the highest being $22.65.Mullen also mentioned there is no set number of hours for substitute work, leading to potential substitutes finding employment elsewhere.
