Last spring, while out on a tour of the Canada-led NATO training mission in Iraq, I had a chilling exchange with a Canadian soldier from the force protection unit deployed to the Taji Airbase north of Baghdad. That morning, we were out at the Iraqi Army’s Military Engineering School where Canadian trainers were helping their Iraqi counterparts develop a course curriculum for mine clearance and improvised explosive device disposal.
“The Shia militias,” the soldier told me, requesting anonymity. “We see them sometimes watching us. They take notes on our movements. We’re not sure what they’re up to.” The goal of the NATO mission, Major-General Dany Fortin, its top commander at the time, told me, was to help Iraq fend for itself so it would no longer need to rely on foreign-backed militias. What the mission needed, he added, was time.
The Iranian regime will not collapse. Soleimani may have been a central figure, arguably Iran’s second most powerful man after Ayatollah Khamanei, but the organization he headed is well-established and thoroughly dug into it positions in the Middle East, including Iraq and Syria. Soleimani himself had headed the IRGC since 1998, enough time to leave a lasting mark on its structures and strategies.
An American military withdrawal would also produce some dangerous ripple effects. In the absence of a U.S. presence, the NATO training mission, now headed by Canadian Major-General Jennie Carignan, would be in jeopardy. The mission relies heavily on U.S. logistical support without which it is unlikely to survive.
The US did not go rogue, they took out a guy that threatened the safety of all western countries. Good riddance to this terrorist
Oh well, welcome to Trudeau's world ..
Pass.
The simple fact that the word terrorists was not used to talk about terrorists seems to put this as an Iranian propaganda piece. That is a new low even for you McLeans
I hate being in the crossfire!! Things were a helluva easier pre-Trump. I should run a long stay Airbnb for US draft dodgers. We know plenty of Canadian-Iranian families in Vancouver who are worried about loved ones in Iran. It's a sad turn all around.
What Rave was that photo taken at? Looks intensely rad!
We can only hope it is the impetus for a regime change
Rogue?
Iranians been a world danger since Xerxes, well before Trump showed up. This isnt Obama's USA
Many refugees in many parts of the world have been celebrating his demise.
I doubt it. The Iranian regime will eat itself first as the Iranian people rise up and delegate them to the dustbin of history.
I agree that the U.S. President may have 'potentially kicked off an escalatory cycle that will lead to all-out war...' and I am thankful that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has given voice to my concerns about this ill-considered assassination.
“And remember while it’s very important to destroy these news outlets and ensure that the sacks of human excrement they call journalists end up eating cat food alone in the dark, its also important to have fun!”…
Obama dropped over 26,171 bombs on 7 different countries during 2016 & the left didn’t bat an eye. But Trump drops 1 airstrike on the world’s most savage terrorist & they lose their minds.
Vietnam 4.0
JustinTrudeau please read. Canada should not involve itself in another American created disaster.
Trump hinted to his Mar a Lago clients that something was in the making, but US allies? once again hung out to dry....
Another person in the media with Trump derangement syndrome.
Is this alleged news source unaware that Iran declared war on the US in 1979? If you hide, sniveling, in the face of a tyrant, they win. Many Iranians are celebrating today, unlike screaming SJW Westerners, who have NO IDEA what these people must live under.
Depends upon your perspective really.
All Democratic countries must unite in their condemnation of Middle East terrorist groups, and the countries supporting/sheltering them!DissolveUN CrushGlobalism ReformNeeded DefendDemocracy
This tweet and article wont age well cdnpoli Promise
Good thing Trudeau put them there.
oh, I have no doubt that the American soldiers have our Canadian military back .. Gezz,, Trudeau no where to be seen .. I thought great Leaders in history guided and protected their military in conflicts.
Then it's good great news. Retaliation means more weapons used and this means higher weapons produced and HIGHER SHARE HOLDER value.
Someone just wet the bed
sweeps the tens of thousands of maimings and deaths this man was responsible for under the rug. Nothing to look at here. Trump should have ignored the murders like Obama and enrich and empower this man.
