Sobeys Inc. says the pay bump is "the right thing to do" and that it will run until the end of mandated lockdowns or until the company determines based on "ever-changing circumstances."
The company says the bonus is a temporary program that rewards employees for the amount of time they work during the lockdown period. Sobeys says the more an employee works during the government-mandated lockdown the more they earn, ranging from $10 to $100 more a week.The company says the bonus is being paid to front-line workers at Sobeys, Foodland, FreshCo, Farm Boy, Voila by Sobeys, retail support centre employees and certain IGA locations in locked down regions of Quebec.

3/3 - I don't think of myself as a hero either, it doesn't matter to me one way or another if I got the pandemic pay, it's my job, but I'm just saying it doesn't seem right they way it's all been handled! (and please, no haters)

1/3 - hmm, think that fordnation guy should do the same for ALL of us Front Line Hospital workers I mean we got two checks last year when the virus started, then we never heard of it again, yet he said the second & third wave is much worse than the first one and has variants!!

They should have been given it all along! In fact I think all this has shown us that those who work for minimum wage are some of the most important people keeping us going.

Took them long enough. Grocery store workers and other frontline workers should have been on strike a long time ago. Absolutely despicable how these corporate billionaires have disrespected them.

So they get an increase in pay, which puts them in a higher tax bracket, which means more taxes, but come tax time, they will be getting their lower wages again, only with a tax bill sobeys you need to give them the increase and leave it!!

I have three grocery stores in my area and admittedly, pick Sobeys last. For no particular reason - just habit. Sobeys will be getting my business for the next few weeks until the others follow suit. Well done!
