After a six-week 'digital smash and grab' of her online identity, the Toronto Star’s Susan Delacourt is finally back in control of her social media account on X after a virtual imposter gained access to her email, phone number, bank account, and took over her entire online identity. But while her digital security has been shaken to its core, she says she isn’t sure she can completely condemn the site and its occupationally necessary newsfeed.
Delacourt said she regained access to most of her accounts within a few days after changing her phone number, email, and banking information. Still, she described that experience alone as a “Kafka-esque nightmare.” To stop the hacker from accessing those accounts, Delacourt explained, she needed to change her phone number, but to re-access those accounts, she would need a two-factor authentication code that would be sent to the old number until she could sign in.
