Jason Kenney says Alberta will go ahead with a Senate vote this fall. But will the winners be allowed to sit in the upper house—even if a Prime Minister agrees to appoint them?

The attributes that exclude one from being appointed to Canada’s Senate have been established since 1867: if you’re under 30, or older than 75; if you’re not a Canadian citizen; if you don’t have more than $4,000 of real property; if you do not resideMore recently, another potential dealbreaker has come into play: the eligible appointee canhave won an election to become a senator. Not an election sanctioned by Ottawa, at least, and possibly not one run by a province.

In some interpretations, this also negates any province’s ability to get its elected favourites appointed. Emmett Macfarlane, a University of Waterloo political scientist and constitutional law expert, says the 2014 Supreme Court ruling is not clear on appointing candidates elected in provincially run votes.

We absolutely need a publically elected Senate in Canada with a real purpose and real power to balance out the ruling party in Parliament. We need to stop the useless expensive positions of patronage hat we currently have in the Senate. Let's elect some experienced strong leaders

We did direct elections of Senators here in the US in the early 20th century. Get with it, Canada.

Can anyone explain to me how appointing ( for life virtually) an elected senator is any better than appointing an unelected one? U can’t turf either one. How on earth does appointing a one time elected senator for life make anything better or more democratically legit.

Canada is slowing down on first doses, but that could be a good thing - Macleans.caThe plain truth is we're running out of arms that haven't already had needles jabbed into them, and Round 2 is full swing We all know how to get to the point of herd immunity and putting needles into arms. You just make it so that employers say it is mandatory. Protect all staff and customers, and then set in place a system to only allow people in who can prove they have been poked. It’s not a good thing. We have reach vaccinate hesitancy unfortunately. Too many people’s not understanding the importance to get vaccinated. Let the anti-vaxxers go………less crazy out there is a good thing.
