Simon’s hopeful words were contrasted by a letter from the office of First Nations National Chief Archibald. That letter, addressed to the King, called on the monarch to approach his honorary role as Commissioner-in-Chief with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with careful consideration, while alleging that RCMP officers forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families and placed them in residential schools.
She says that while Indigenous communities have a strong desire to build a positive relationship with the King and the federal government, introducing a new representative, independent of the Governor General role, may be helpful in advancing Indigenous priorities.Article content Simon was appointed by the late Queen, and while she herself is Indigenous, the Governor General’s mandate is to represent the voices of all Canadians, not exclusively to champion Indigenous issues and solutions. Mbarki says that a new model could determine where that potential representative may sit in the government and how they might be elected.
According to Mbarki, members of the royal family usually make one or two stops to Indigenous communities on their visits to Canada, but on Charles’ next trip, she would like to see the King visit more regions and speak to a more diverse group to gain a better understanding of the common issues that affect Indigenous communities, such as land disputes all over Canada.
