WASHINGTON — In the days leading up to the special counsel’s much-anticipated appearance before Congress, Democrats argued that hearing from Robert Mueller on television could transform the impeachment debate. While Americans might not read the book, the argument went, they would watch the movie.
“Much as I hate to say it, this morning’s hearing was a disaster,” Laurence Tribe, the Harvard law professor who has argued that the House should pursue impeachment, wrote on Twitter. “Far from breathing life into his damning report, the tired Robert Mueller sucked the life out of it. The effort to save democracy and the rule of law from this lawless president has been set back, not advanced.”
All of this does not mean Trump or his associates are out of political or legal danger. The hotel lawsuit or a similar one regarding the Constitution’s “emoluments” clauses could still reach the Supreme Court. Other investigations of Trump, his associates and his organizations remain active. Democratic lawmakers continue to fight to enforce various subpoenas and have gone to court seeking access to Trump’s tax returns.
Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney in Michigan, said that the totality of the case was still powerful. “The format and Mueller’s stubborn neutrality make the facts come out haltingly, but the facts would be compelling, if not shocking, for anyone who has not heard them before,” she said. “Mueller testified today that Russia committed crimes to help elect Trump, that Trump welcomed the help and that he then lied about it.
The day was marked by the predictable partisan crossfire between Democrats acting as prosecutors of Trump and Republicans acting as his defense lawyers. While Democrats sought to get Mueller to agree with their interpretations about the illegality of Trump’s actions, Republicans drilled in on what they called the unfair origins of the investigation.
The hearings left some viewers looking for a clear bottom line. Neal Katyal, a former acting solicitor general under President Barack Obama, agreed that the morning hearing before the House Judiciary Committee focused on obstruction of justice “was meandering.” But he said the afternoon session before the House Intelligence Committee focused on Russia’s clandestine campaign on Trump’s behalf was more damaging.
I saw a lawman carefully trying to keep from affecting existing and future prosecution. I saw someone who cares about National security warning the US and the world about cyber intrusion and conspiracy to compromise leaders. He is fighting against corruprion❤️
He was never going to pen a can of worms, the Democrats better get ready for the election.
It wasn’t a movie. It wasn’t supposed to be a movie. What the fuck is wrong with everyone?
Life is not a TV show. Wrap your heads around that and start focusing on substance.
Because politics is now just entertainment. Substance be damned. Awful as this is south of the border, the desire to import it up here is troubling....
Trump was right he had no material to work with . Let’s start to focus on Trudeau now please . Lots of material there.
Wtf were you watching?
