Observers predict a conflagration that could leave a quarter of a million people dead, or worse

It is in any case a peace process in name only. The slaughters continued throughout a three-day “ceasefire” for the Eid holiday from last Thursday to Saturday. A pro-Taliban Hanafi “scholar” ordered the assassination of a Sufi imam in Kabul on Saturday, one of several outrages over the weekend. Within 24 hours after the Eid holiday had ended, the Afghan government recorded 110 attacks in 23 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.

More than a decade ago, the work of negotiating with the Taliban had fallen to Burhanuddin Rabbani, the president of the Islamic republic the Taliban overthrew in the 1990s. Most of the victims were Hazara schoolgirls.Royesh is a Hazara, the principal of the co-educational Marefat High School in Daste-Barchi, a Hazara enclave of more than a million people in Kabul.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned that the pattern of attacks on the mainly Shia Hazaras in recent years — dozens of targeted bombings and assassinations — has all the hallmarks of genocide.
