Does your teen have a good job in the city? Are they working for the man every night and day? They may be responsible, but it looks like they’re also more likely to get their hands on the Devil’s Lettuce than their non-working peers, per a new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
The study, led by Washington State University’s Assistant Professor Dr. Janessa Graves, examined data from the Healthy Youth Survey in Washington completed in 2010 and 2016 . The survey is completed annually for a total of 76,000 teens in grades eight, 10, and 12. Researchers compared cannabis consumption in adolescents, asking youth about their employment status and whether they had consumed cannabis over the past month. They then examined the differences over time between the two groups of teens.“Youth working in formal settings, such as retail and service sectors, were more likely to use marijuana than non-working and youth working in informal settings, such as babysitting,” according to the study.
Dr. Graves said she “wasn’t shocked” by the results that showed working adolescents have a higher prevalence of cannabis consumption than their unemployed counterparts. “I am a bit surprised how the 12th graders’ patterns differed from the eighth and 10th graders. The 12th graders are acting more like adults,” Dr. Graves told The Spokesman-Review. “One thing I really like to highlight though is that so much of it depends on the quality of the workplace,” she continued. “Some places are really good for adolescents to work. Not all workplaces are created equal.
