The Dalhousie team of Purcell, McEachren, Caelan McPherson of Halifax and David McCurdy of Truro won a U Sports qualifying tournament in September, defeating Wilfred Laurier 8-5 in the final to earn them a trip to Lake Placid. The win redeemed a loss by the Purcell rink to Laurier in the 2021 University Games qualifying final.
Held at some of the same venues of the 1980 Winter Olympiad – including the Herb Brooks Arena where The Miracle on Ice remains frozen in time – the University Games are like the Olympics but on a smaller scale.
