The Toronto District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the Peel District School Board and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board have launched the more than $4-billion lawsuit. The boards claim the social media giants are responsible for disrupting student learning and the education system.
“The influence of social media on today’s youth at school cannot be denied,” said Colleen Russell-Rawlins, Director of Education, Toronto District School Board. “It leads to pervasive problems such as distraction, social withdrawal, cyberbullying, a rapid escalation of aggression, and mental health challenges. Therefore, it is imperative that we take steps to ensure the well-being of our youth.
The statement from the boards says the fall out from social media is causing massive strains on the boards’ finite resources, including additional needs for in-school mental health programs, a personnel, and increased IT costs. The boards want Meta, the owners of Facebook and Instagram, Snap Inc. and ByteDance, owners of TikTok to remediate the costs to the education system and redesign their products to keep students safe.Ctrl+Enter
