At Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C., John played 34 games over four seasons and made 132 catches for 1,928 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was named SFU’s Most Valuable Player and offensive player of the year in 2019 after he led the NCAA Division II’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference in receptions , receiving yards and touchdowns .
“From the day he stepped on campus, just the sheer size, wingspan and the size of his hands … the kid doesn’t drop the ball,” Kelly Bates, who was SFU’s head coach when John was recruited, told Postmedia. “It’s really impressive. He’s so tall. He moves so well for a guy his size. It’s gonna come down to someone wanting to take a chance because of where he’s coming from, but understanding that finding that skill set with those physical tools is not an easy thing to do.
“What you start to find out about Rysen is that he has, for lack of a better term, an old-school mentality. He’d rather be seen than heard. He’s very quiet. He has a tremendous work ethic — and not just on the field. Everything that he has, he’s had to work for. Nothing’s come easily.”
