Stranger things have happened. No, let me rephrase that; Stranger Things has happened. The Netflix show debuted in 2016 and was an instant hit thanks to its watchable young stars, ’80s nostalgia vibe and an air of danger and mystery.
Add to that list Tales from the Loop, a new Amazon Prime series that debuts April 3. Unlike Stranger Things, it’s based on a previous work, a 2014 narrative art book by Simon Stålenhag, about the construction of a particle accelerator. There’s also a tabletop role-playing game of the same name, set in 1980. The series, created and written by Nathanial Halpern, opens with the head of Jonathan Pryce filling the screen.
We are then introduced to Loretta , whom I would say looks to be about Eleven if I wasn’t worried about giving you ideas. She will, by the end of the episode, discover she has a bizarre connection with Rebecca Hall’s character, mother of a little boy named Cole . This is as much as I’m willing to say – even though it’s just part one of seven season-one episodes, I’d hate to spoil its own narrative twists.
The series promises to be filled with oodles of other mysterious objects. One future episode includes a metal sphere that returns an echo if you shout into it – the longer it lasts, the longer your life. Imagine the look on a character whose voice just vanishes into the orb.
