Millions of voters in Taiwan have chosen a presidential candidate from the Democratic People's Party for an unprecedented third term, defying China's influence. The DPP's win will extend their eight-year term in office, with Lai Ching-te taking over as the new president.

In Taiwan , millions of voters have rebuffed China and elected a presidential candidate from the incumbent Democratic People’s Party for an unprecedented third term in office. Thousands gathered to celebrate the DPP’s win, which will extend its eight-year term in the presidential office. Lai Ching-te, the party’s vice-president since 2020, will be taking over the top job and will look to lead the island country through its testy relationship with Beijing . David Akin reports.

“There is no rancour that cannot be resolved, no problem that cannot be discussed, and no force that can separate us.” Beijing claims the independent island of Taiwan is a Chinese province and has threatened to use force to achieve unification. China frequently sends warplanes and naval vessels to circle the small island democracy and has been mounting an increasing number of military drills over recent years. The meeting took place on Wednesday in Beijing’s Great Hall, which is normally reserved for foreign leaders.
