The federal NDP candidate for Burnaby North-Seymour tweeted that the Green party byelection win in Nanaimo-Ladysmith was a “wake-up call.”

Svend Robinson is making good on a promise to push his own party to make climate change a key election issue, despite running the risk of causing friction with his colleagues.

The Green party’s Paul Manly won with 37.3 per cent of the vote, followed by the Conservatives with 24.8 per cent and the NDP with 23.1 per cent. The Liberals trailed with 11 per cent. Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who won the Burnaby South byelection in February, has defended his support of the $40-billion LNG Canada project in northern B.C.

“I’m confident that the leadership of the party will recognize that we were sent an important message in the byelection and that we’ve got to step up, and we’ve got to be bold,” he said. “We’ve got to put this front-and-centre on the political agenda.” Robinson’s tweet wasn’t out-of-character but will likely cause friction with some of his colleagues, said Hamish Telford, associate professor of political science at the University of the Fraser Valley.

“The NDP has always been torn, throughout its history, over whether it is going to be a pragmatic party that competes with the Liberals in the centre of the political spectrum or a more radical party off to the left, arguing for more full-throated, social democratic kind of policy,” Telford said. “There will be people who just think this is impractical and not very pragmatic, and others are going to love it.

If B.C. by-election is a harbinger of things to come, then the Liberals and NDP had better watch outThe Green victory in Nanaimo-Ladysmith came at the expense of other centre-left parties, which suffered a grim night: the NDP lost a seat and the Liberal vote dropped by half globepolitics NDP are the big losers, sign of things to come in October. Green candidate Paul Manly says Nanaimo-Ladysmith win puts 'old parties' on notice over climate changeThe Green party won the byelection with a comfortable margin over their Tory competitor with the NDP candidate, the party that formerly held the seat, placing third. Not buying that line, but it does put the other national parties on notice that they’ve got a lot of work to do, and their respective leaders are not getting much traction with the voters.
