Suspected state-backed Russian hackers are believed to have stolen the entire contents of a personal e-mail account used by former British trade minister Liam Fox as part of an attempt to sway the 2019 U.K. election, two sources told Reuters.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a criminal investigation into the hack is under way, said the compromised account was hosted by an online e-mail service and was not an official government address. Reuters was not able to determine which online e-mail provider was used, and representatives for Fox declined to comment on Tuesday.
Government guidance to ministers and their staff issued in 2013 says that in addition to official e-mail systems “other forms of electronic communication may be used in the course of conducting Government business,” but highlights a series of privacy and security factors that should be taken into account.
