Surfers compete in approximately 30-minute heats, or rounds, and try to catch as many waves as possible. A panel of judges scores each wave a surfer rides, looking at commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative maneuvers, variety of maneuvers, combinations of major moves, speed, power and flow.
Weather and wave conditions are incredibly important in surfing, and organizers look at the weather forecast, wave height, wind direction, temperature and tidal movement on the day of the competition, according to the Associated Press. The Tokyo Olympics are taking place during Japan’s typhoon season, which is good news for some surfers, according to Reuters. The incoming typhoon make for bigger waves at Tsurigasaki, which is known for smaller, weaker waves.
The preliminary rounds consisted of five heats of four surfers in each division.
