The 69\u002Dyear\u002Dold Sunshine Coast resident has taken part in the annual event since 1988 — only three years after its inaugural edition.

“It was a challenge from my best friend,” Winn said. “He had been doing it for a couple of years. He said, ‘Why don’t you run with me, train with me. We’ll do the Sun Run together.’”

“I think I was just so disappointed with what was happening with COVID, and I didn’t have the desire to get out,” he said. But he will be back at it for 2022, walking the 10k as part of the virtual component taking place April 15-24. The in-person run is April 24.Article content“I’ve only ever done it for the challenge and excitement of the race day and getting out there. I’m not a fast runner. I’m not out there to set my personal best time.

At the time of his retirement, he was a manager at 3M. The job required him to travel to many manufacturing locations in North America and worldwide. “I’ve done it enough times in the pouring rain and the slush,” he said. “Some days it was hot, although not too often in April. In the beginning, the route was through Stanley Park, and the path got very narrow. On occasion, people fell, and there was always the fear of getting trampled. I was glad when they changed the route. In the early days, it was about 15,000 people, and now it’s over 40,000. That’s a lot of people on the streets.
