After an emotionally charged meeting to decide police involvement in the Pride march this year, the local organization is seeking further comment from the 2SLGBTQ+ community

After an emotionally charged meeting to discuss police involvement in Pride festivities this year, Fierté Sudbury Pride is reaching out to their community for more input. At issue is the announcement that after cancelling their march last year due to the requirement to involve police, FSP decided that this year the parade should go ahead — with GSPS participation.

“The board’s decision making process lacked sufficient community input, failing to accurately represent the diverse values and interests of our community,” reads the post. In addition to committing to “rectifying this oversight.” and recognizing the need to listen to the voices of the more marginalized members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, they promise to be more transparent in their communication.”

In a May 30 interview, Matthew Morin FSP activism lead told Sudbury.com the choice to include police this year came down to the current climate: a year that has seen several anti-SOGI protests both in Sudbury and across the country. Even the burning of a Pride Flag at a highschool in Algoma, which Morin said has left many feeling insecure.
