“Right now, I see opportunity,” said Earle, the centre’s chief executive officer.“We have a beautiful resource, we just have to figure out a way that it can be used to benefit the local community in the best way possible.”
It could cost upwards of $300 million to complete the entire plan. But Earle said it is broken into various phases and would require partners to help implement the development.“There’s going to have to be development or sale fairly rapidly simply because there’s only so long that we can maintain this,” Earle said. “Certainly, by next year, we would like to see some development.”
When the base closed, the property was turned over to the association. During the next 10 years, it divested itself of roughly 265 homes, primarily located on the south side of Highway 1, and businesses moved into the park.The association operated the conference centre since the base closed in 1994 with the primary source of revenue coming from the HMCS Acadia Cadet Training Centre.
Morrison credited Earle, her staff and the board, which his wife Elizabeth McMichael sits on, for their dedication to the area. The association is currently having condition assessments done on the buildings. Earle said some have really good post and beam construction, which may be able to be renovated for another use in the future.
