Ottawa hasn't been tracking the quality of subsidized food shipped up to the North, says a new document. 'This amplifies concerns that many people already have...the department has no idea what’s going on,' says Nunavut MP LoriIdlout of Nutrition North.

Some subsidized food earmarked for northerners never makes it to store shelves because it is spoiled, a northern MP says, and she’s disappointed the government is making no effort to track how often that happens.that the federal Nutrition North program, which exists to improve food security in the North, has failed.

Idlout submitted questions to Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal about the checks and balances in place to make sure the food the federal government subsidizes to lower costs for northerners is edible when it arrives at northern grocery stores.
